Niobium diboride (NbB2) is a highly covalent refractory ceramic material with a hexagonal crystal structure.

NbB2 can be synthesized by a stoichiometric reaction between the constituent elements (in this case, Nb and B). This reaction allows precise stoichiometric control of the material. Nb2O5 (or NbO2) can also be reduced to niobium diboride by metal thermal reduction. Use cheap precursor materials and react according to the following reactions:

Nb2O5 + 2 B2O3 + 11 Mg→2 NbB2 + 11 MgO

Mg is used as a reactant to perform acid leaching of undesirable oxide products. During the thermal reduction of metals, a stoichiometric excess of Mg and B2O3 is usually required in order to consume all available niobium oxide.

Jha and his colleagues proposed that NbO2 and element boron are reduced by solid-state reaction to obtain nanorods (40×800 nm2).
