Aluminum carbide is an ionic compound with a rhombic hexahedral structure

Overview of Aluminum Carbide Al4C3 Powder

Aluminum carbide is an inorganic compound with the molecular formula Al4C3. Yellow or green-gray crystal block or powder, hygroscopic. High-temperature decomposition, hydrolysis in cold water into methane and aluminum hydroxide.

Aluminum carbide is an ionic compound with a rhombic hexahedral structure, with high hardness, shear strength and melting point, making it an ideal second-phase strengthening material for aluminum-based materials. Aluminum carbide golden yellow hexagonal small flake crystals. The relative density is 2.36, stable at 1400℃, and decomposes above 2200℃. It decomposes into methane when it meets water. It is stored in a dry and cool place. It is insoluble in acetone and decomposes when encountering dilute acid. It is made by co-heating pure aluminum powder and pure carbon.

At present, the preparation methods of aluminum carbide mainly include metal direct carbonization method, carbothermic reduction method, sol-gel method, microwave synthesis method and high-energy mechanical ball milling synthesis method. Among them, the direct metal carbonization method and the carbothermic reduction method are the first synthetic methods adopted, and some of the technologies have been applied to industrial production. However, the disadvantages of these two methods are that the required synthesis temperature is high, the reaction time is long, and the obtained powder has a large particle size.

First, prepare a mixture consisting of 1 part heavy smoke black and 6 parts heavy aluminum powder, moisten the mixture with pine essential oil, put a tight layer in a clay crucible, and spread a layer of carbon powder on it. The crucible should be covered with a lid, and all the gaps should be smeared with refractory soil mixed with asbestos fibers. Then, after placing the crucible with the mixture in an oven for pre-drying, the mixture is burned at a temperature not lower than 1200°C for 30 minutes. A higher temperature can make the reaction proceed better. After cooling, the product is treated with dilute hydrochloric acid (or alkaline solution) under cooling to remove excess aluminum. The aluminum carbide prepared as a fine crystalline powder is washed with water to remove aluminum chloride, then the water is quickly washed away with alcohol, and the product is placed in a drying box at a temperature of 80-90°C for drying. The product contains a large amount of aluminum nitride.

Pure aluminum carbide is colorless, but the products made by the above method often have different colors due to impurities in the raw materials. When the calculated amount of the mixture of aluminum and soot is calcined in hydrogen, a pure product without aluminum nitride can be obtained. This calcination should be carried out at a temperature of 18001900℃ for 23h. The obtained product is ground and calcined again at the above-mentioned temperature.

Applications of Aluminum Carbide Al4C3 Powder

Aluminum carbide is often used as an additive to enhance the strength of three-component aluminum-based materials (Al-Si-AlC, Al-AlTi-AlC). In addition, aluminum carbide is an important compound in the technical field of the metal aluminum industry. It is used in the metallurgical industry to reduce metal oxides, in the chemical industry as a catalyst for chemical reactions, and in the ceramic industry for making high temperature, cutting and molds. Advanced ceramic materials. As an ionic compound, in the lattice structure of aluminum carbide, carbon atoms exist as a single C. C has strong alkalinity. During hydrolysis, methane is produced by C+4H→CH, so aluminum carbide is also used as a methane generator and desiccant. At the same time, the rhombic hexahedron of aluminum carbide is a structure in which aluminum carbide and aluminum carbide sheets are alternately stacked. It is this unique structure that makes one-dimensional aluminum carbide nanowires a potential cold electron emitter.
