Overview of Aluminum Nitride AlN Powder

Aluminum nitride (AlN) is a solid nitride of aluminum. It has a high thermal conductivity of up to 321 W/(m K) and is an electrical insulator. Its wurtzite phase (w-AlN) has a band gap of about 6 eV at room temperature and has potential applications in optoelectronics operating at deep ultraviolet frequencies.

Aluminum nitride is stable at high temperatures in an inert atmosphere, melting at about 2200 °C. In a vacuum, AlN decomposes at about 1800 °C. In air, surface oxidation occurs above 700 °C, and even at room temperature, a 5-10 nm thick surface oxide layer is detected. This oxide layer protects the material at temperatures up to 1370 °C. Above this temperature extensive oxidation occurs. Aluminum nitride is stable up to 980 °C in hydrogen and carbon dioxide atmospheres. The material dissolves slowly in mineral acids by grain boundary erosion and in strong bases by erosion of aluminum nitride grains. The material hydrolyzes slowly in water. Aluminum nitride is resistant to attack by most molten salts, including chlorides and cryolite. Aluminum nitride can be patterned using Cl2-based reactive ion etching.

Currently, there is a lot of research into the development of light-emitting diodes operating under UV light using gallium nitride-based semiconductors, and using aluminum gallium nitride alloys, wavelengths as short as 250 nm have been achieved. In 2006, low-efficiency AlN LED emission at 210 nm was reported.
