Application and preparation of lithium sulfide powder

Overview of lithium sulfide

Lithium sulfide is an inorganic compound with the molecular formula Li2S. It will crystallize in the form of anti-fluorite, called salt (Li +) 2S2-. It forms a solid yellow-white deliquescent powder. In the air, hydrogen sulfide (the smell of rotten eggs) is easily released. Lithium sulfide is a lithium source that is moderately soluble in water and acid and is used for purposes compatible with sulfate. Sulfate compounds are salts or esters of sulfuric acid formed by replacing one or two hydrogens with metals.

Hydrogen sulfide can be released by acid. It can react with nitric acid solution, but hydrobromic acid and hydroiodic acid can only be oxidized by oxygen when heated to about 300°C in the air without producing sulfur dioxide. Is to generate lithium sulfate.

Lithium sulfide is usually slightly harmful to water bodies. Do not expose unsubstituted or large

amounts of products to the ground, water courses or sewage systems, and believe that the government does not allow the discharge of materials into the surrounding environment.

Preparation of lithium sulfide

Lithium sulfide can be prepared by a variety of methods.

In the past, lithium and sulfur were heated together to react, and carbon or hydrogen was used to reduce lithium sulfate under heating to produce lithium sulfide.

It was later discovered that lithium and sulfur can play a role in liquid ammonia, or lithium ethoxide can decompose the ethanol adduct of lithium hydrosulfide to form lithium sulfide.

Later, someone first prepared lithium hydrogen sulfide by reacting lithium pentoxide with hydrogen sulfide, and then decomposed the lithium hydrogen sulfide to prepare lithium sulfide by heating in a vacuum.

By reacting metallic lithium with hydrogen sulfide in tetrahydrofuran, high-quality anhydrous lithium sulfide can be produced.

Application of lithium sulfide

Lithium sulfide (Li2S) is a product designed specifically for use in high-performance batteries, which can be used as an electrode material or as a precursor for solid electrolytes. As an electrode material, it not only has high capacity, but also overcomes many problems caused by pure sulfur electrodes.

Lithium sulfide is an anti-fluorite semiconductor (band gap of 3.865eV). It exists in orthorhombic and cubic structures. The densities of the orthorhombic and cubic structures are 1.75g/cm3 and 1.63g/cm3, respectively.

Lithium sulfide has been studied as a superconductor similar to MgB2. It is also used as a positive electrode material for rechargeable lithium-sulfur batteries.
