Application of Samarium Oxide in the Market

Samarium oxide Sm2O3 powder overview

Samarium oxide (the chemical formula is Sm2O3) is a pale yellowish-white powder, which is a body-centered cubic or monoclinic crystal system. Rare earth oxides have similar chemical properties, and samarium oxide is no exception, but its magnetic moment is 1.45M·B, which is different from other oxides. The density is 8.347 g/cm3. The melting point is 2262°C. Samarium oxide is insoluble in water but soluble in acid. Samarium oxide absorbs carbon dioxide and water in the air. Under humid conditions or in dry air above 150°C, samarium oxide is easily formed on the surface of the metal samarium. Similar to metallic iron, this oxide layer is stripped from the metal surface, exposing more metal to continue the reaction. It can be used as an additive for luminescent glass that absorbs infrared rays, as a coating in photosensitive materials, as well as making samarium permanent magnet materials and producing metal samarium. The rare earth chloride solution obtained by processing monazite or mixed rare earth ore is obtained by extraction, stripping, zinc powder reduction, precipitation with oxalic acid, separation, and burning.

How is Samarium Oxide Sm2O3 Powder Produced?
Samarium oxide may be prepared by two methods:
1. thermal decomposition of samarium(III) carbonate, hydroxide, nitrate, oxalate or sulfate:
 Sm2(CO3)3 → Sm2O3 + 3 CO2
2. by burning the metal in air or oxygen at a temperature above 150 °C:
 4 Sm + 3 O2 → 2 Sm2O3

Application of samarium oxide Sm2O3 powder

Samarium oxide can be used as an additive in infrared light-emitting glass, in the coating of photosensitive materials, and in the production of samarium permanent magnet materials and metal samarium.

Samarium oxide is used in optical and infrared absorbing glass to absorb infrared radiation.

Samarium oxide is used as a neutron absorber in the control rods of nuclear power reactors.

Samarium oxide can catalyze the dehydration and dehydrogenation of primary and secondary alcohols

Prepare other salts.
