The Vickers hardness of TaB and TaB 2 films and crystals is ~30 GPa. These materials are stable to oxidation and acid corrosion below 700 °C. Production method of tantalum boride TaB2
TaB, Ta 5 B 6, Ta 3 B 4 or TaB 2 single crystals (about 1 cm in diameter and 6 cm in length) can be produced by the floating zone method.
In the temperature range of 540-800°C, a tantalum boride film can be deposited from a gas mixture of TaCl 5 -BCl 3 -H 2 -Ar. TaB 2 (single phase) is deposited with a source gas flow ratio of 6 (BCl 3/TaCl 5) and a temperature higher than 600°C. TaB (single phase) is deposited at BCl 3/TaCl 5 = 2–4 and T = 600–700 °C. TaB 2 nanocrystals were successfully synthesized by using NaBH 4 to reduce Ta 2 O 5 with NaBH 4, the molar ratio of M:B is 1:4, and it lasts for 30 minutes under argon flow at 700-900 °C.
