Manganese (III) oxide is a compound with the chemical formula Mn2O3

Overview of Manganese Oxide Mn2O3

Manganese (III) oxide is a compound with a chemical formula of Mn2O3, a molecular weight of 157.88, a black cubic crystal oxide, and a relative density of 4.50. It is the raw material and intermediate product of manganese compounds. It is insoluble in water, acetic acid and ammonium chloride solution, but soluble in other inorganic acids.

Mn2O3 is different from many other transition metal oxides because it does not use corundum (Al2O3) structure. There are usually two forms, α-Mn2O3 and γ-Mn2O3, although a high-pressure form with a CaIrO3 structure has also been reported.

α-Mn2O3 has a cubic bixbyite structure, which is an example of C-type rare earth sesquioxide (Pearson symbol cI80, space group Ia 3, #206). It has been found that the bixbyite structure is stable due to the presence of a small amount of Fe 3+, and pure Mn2O3 has an orthorhombic crystal structure (Pearson symbol oP24, space group Pbca, #61). Α-Mn2O3 undergoes antiferromagnetic transformation at 80 K.

γ-Mn2O3 has a structure related to the Mn3O4 spinel structure, in which the oxide ions are cubic close-packed. This is similar to the relationship between γ-Fe2O3 and Fe3O4. γ-Mn2O3 is ferrimagnetic, with a Nier temperature of 39 K.

Heating MnO2 in air below 800 °C will produce α-Mn2O3 (higher temperature will produce Mn3O4). Γ-Mn2O3 can be produced by oxidizing manganese (II) hydroxide and then dehydrating it. The preparation of many nanocrystalline Mn2O3 has been reported, for example involving the synthesis of oxidized Mn II salt or reduced MnO2.

Manganese (III) oxide is formed through redox reactions in alkaline batteries:

2 MnO2+ Zn → Mn2o3+ ZnO

Do not confuse manganese (III) oxide Mn2O3 with MnOOH manganese (III) hydroxide. Contrary to Mn2 O3, MnOOH is a compound that decomposes at about 300 °C to form MnO2.

Application of Manganese Oxide Mn2O3

Manganese Oxide Mn2O3 is a highly insoluble, thermally stable source of manganese suitable for glass, optical and ceramic applications. Manganese oxide is a black/brown solid, high-purity (99.999%) manganese oxide (MnO) powder, which is the main natural source of manganese.

Manganese oxide mineral has been used for thousands of years-ancient people used to make pigments and transparent glass, and now it is used as manganese, catalyst and battery material. There are more than 30 manganese oxide minerals distributed in various geological environments.

Main applications in the following areas

1. Mn2O3 has a wide range of uses and can be used in the printing and dyeing process of fabrics.

2. It can effectively catalyze and oxidize organic pollutants and nitrogen oxides, and catalyze organic coupling reactions.

3. It can be used as the precursor of soft magnetic materials.

4. As a raw material for the synthesis of electrode materials for lithium-ion batteries.
