Manganese oxide Mn2O3  is an oxide with a chemical formula of Mn2O3 and a molecular weight of 157.88, black cubic crystals.The relative density is 4.50.Mn2O3 is different from many other transition metal oxides because it does not use corundum(Al2O3)structure.Two forms of Mn2O3 are generally recognized, namely α-Mn2O3 and γ-Mn2O3. Mn2O3 is insoluble in water,acetic acid and ammonium chloride solution,but soluble in other inorganic acids.It dissolves in cold hydrochloric acid to form a brown solution,and forms a red solution in hot dilute sulfuric acid or concentrated sulfuric acid, which decomposes into MnO2 and manganese nitrate in hot nitric acid,and decomposes into Mn3O4 by heating and releases O2.Manganese(III)oxide can be used in the printing and dyeing process of fabrics.It is also used in the oxidation process of carbon monoxide and organic matter.It can also be used to synthesize soft magnetic materials,or as an important basic material for the synthesis of lithium-ion batteries.

 Heating MnO2 in air below 800°C will generate α-Mn2O3(higher temperature will generate Mn3O4). γ-Mn2O3 can be prepared by oxidation of manganese(II)hydroxide and then dehydration.The preparation of many nanocrystalline Mn 2 O 3 has been reported,for example involving the oxidation of MnII salt or the synthesis of MnO 2 reduction.

2 MnO2 + Zn→Mn2O3 + ZnO

Manganese (III) oxide should not be confused with MnOOH manganese (III) oxyhydroxide. In contrast to Mn2O3, MnOOH is a compound that decomposes at about 300°C to form MnO2.
