All operations must be performed under N2 or Ar atmosphere.
1. The dehydrated chloride is dissolved in methanol and electrolyzed with graphite anode (d=12mm) and mercury cathode. The electrolysis vessel is equipped with multiple ground glass joints for inserting graphite anode, stirrer, N2 tube, and water. Sleeve and the piston at the bottom. Use a voltage of 40V to ensure a current of 1-2A. The magnitude of the current depends on the distance between the cathode and anode (10-20mm). Unreacted mercury passes from the spherical tube 1 to the spherical tube 2 by distillation, and then the connection of the spherical tube is disconnected. The composition of the amalgam alloy in tube 1 depends on the temperature of mercury distillation (200-300°C).
2. The rare earth metal is in contact with mercury (20-30 times the amount of rare earth metal) in the glass tube at 300~350℃. The amalgamation can also purify metals. Because rare earth metal oxides are lighter than mercury, they will float on the surface of the amalgam to obtain a thick paste-like solid, namely the amalgam, and then directly undergo the nitridation reaction.

The amalgam is placed in the two Mo boats of the quartz tube. The first one contains only 1/5 of the amalgam to further purify the N2, because the product NdN can absorb trace amounts of O2. Pour in N2, control and heat according to the following requirements: 340℃ for 2~3h, 500℃ for 2~3h, 700℃ for 12~15h, 1000℃ for 1~5h. Do not use rubber tubing or plastic tubing (both are easy to seep water) for N2 conduits, and use glass tubing for all connections.
