Overview of Diboride H HfB2:

Diboride H HfB2 belongs to a kind of ultra-high temperature ceramics, which is a ceramic composed of ha and boron. Its melting temperature is approximately 3250°C. It is an unusual ceramic with relatively high thermal and electrical conductivity, and has the same properties as titanium diboride and zirconium diboride of the same structure. It is a gray metal appearance material. Diboride has a hexagonal crystal structure with a molar mass of 200.11 g/mol and a density of ~10.5 g/cm³.

Diboride H HfB2 is often used in combination with carbon, boron, silicon, silicon carbide and/or nickel to improve the consolidation (sintering) of the diboride powder powder. It is usually made into a solid by a process called hot pressing, in which the powder is pressed together by heat and pressure.

What is the scope of application of diborides H HfB2?

Hafnium diboride in wear-resistant coatings. Due to its excellent fire resistance, people are also considering using it together with silicon carbide (SiC) for ultra-high temperature composite materials. The addition of silicon carbide improves its oxidation resistance.

The oxidation resistance of diboride ha depends on temperature and pressure. At a temperature of 1500°C and a pressure of 1 atmosphere, a protective oxide scale of magnesium oxide is formed. When the temperature rises above 1600°C and the pressure drops below 1 atm, the oxidation resistance of HfB2 will be greatly reduced. Under these conditions, the boiling temperature of B2O3 (one of the oxidation products of HfB2) is exceeded, and a protective oxide layer is formed.

Due to its strength and thermal properties, the material has the potential to be used in speeding reentry vehicles, such as ICBM insulation panels or aerodynamic fronts. Unlike polymers and composite materials, HfB2 can be formed into an aerodynamic shape and will not disappear during the foldback process.

Diboride as a possible new material for nuclear reactor control rods has also been studied.

Diboride is also being studied as a diffusion barrier for microchips. If synthesized correctly, the barrier can be less than 7 nm thick.
