Zirconium diboride (ZrB2) is a kind of high covalent refractory ceramic material with a hexagonal crystal structure. It is an ultra-high temperature ceramic (UHTC) with a melting point of 3246°C. Its relatively low density of about 6.09 g/cm3(the measured density may be higher due to hafnium impurities) and good high-temperature strength make it a candidate for high-temperature aerospace applications, such as hypersonic flight or rocket propulsion systems. It is an unusual ceramic with relatively high thermal and electrical conductivity and has the same properties as titanium diboride and hafnium diboride with the same structure.

Zirconium diboride is a hard gray crystal in nature. Zirconium boride has three components: zirconium boride, zirconium diboride, and zirconium tribromide. Only zirconium diboride is stable over a wide temperature range. Industrial production is mainly zirconium diboride. Zirconium diboride is a hexagonal crystal, gray crystal or powder, with a melting point of 3040℃. Zirconium diboride is resistant to high temperature and has high strength at both normal and high temperatures. ZrB2 parts are usually hot-pressed (pressure is applied to heated powder) and then machined into shape. The covalency of the material and the presence of surface oxides hinder the coarsening of the ZrB2 grains during sintering, which leads to densification. Sintering additives such as boron carbide and carbon can react with surface oxides to increase the sintering driving force. Usually, ~30 vol% SiC is added to ZrB2, through which SiC forms a protective oxide layer (similar to the protective coating of aluminum oxide) to improve the oxidation resistance.

The high-temperature mechanical stability of zirconium diboride comes from the high atomic defect energy (i.e. the atoms are not easy to deviate from their lattice positions), which means that even at high temperatures, the defect concentration remains low, thus preventing material failure.
