Calcium hexaboride is a compound of calcium and boron with the chemical formula CaB6. It is an important material due to its high conductivity, hardness, chemical stability and melting point. It is a black, shiny, chemically inert powder with low density. The melting point of calcium hexaboride is 2230°C, the relative density is 2.33g/cm, and it is insoluble in water at 15°C and normal temperature. Calcium hexaboride has a typical cubic structure of hexameter boride, with octahedral units of hexaboron atoms and calcium atoms. Both CaB6 and CaB6 doped with lanthanum show weak ferromagnetic properties. This is a remarkable fact because calcium and boron have neither magnetism nor internal 3d or 4f electronic shells, which are usually required for ferromagnetism.
CaB6 is insoluble in H2O, MeOH (methanol) and EtOH (ethanol), and slowly dissolves in acid. Its microhardness is 27 GPa, Knoop hardness is 2600 kg/mm2), Young's modulus is 379 GPa, and the resistivity of the pure crystal is greater than 2·1010Ω·m. CaB6 is a semiconductor with an estimated energy gap of 1.0 eV. The low half-metal conductivity of many CaB6 samples can be explained by accidental doping due to impurities and possible non-stoichiometry.
There are many compounds between B-Ca, but the common and stable one is CaB6, so calcium boride mainly refers to calcium hexaboride CaB6. The difference is that the B6 octahedron replaces the position of Cs. Due to the strong covalent bond between B-B, it has the characteristics of high melting point and high hardness. Its physical and chemical properties are quite stable. When calcined in air, sub-micron CaB6 will only show thermal weight gain after 800 degrees Celsius and is not easy to oxidize. CaB6is generally insoluble in hydrochloric acid and sulfuric acid, so technically hot hydrochloric acid is used to remove impurities. Material, but CaB6 is soluble in nitric acid.

7. Cab6 is used to prepare catalyst containing boron calcium nitride (Ca3B2N4) and hexagonal boron nitride mixture, and the preparation of excellent performance of crystalline cubic boron nitride.
8. Cab6 as a boron alloy cast iron desulfurization, deoxygenation, boron agent.
9. CAB6 is used as a deoxidizer in metal smelting
10. Cab6 is used in the production of boron alloy steel and as a deoxidizer in the production of oxygen-free copper.
11. CAB6 can also be used as high-temperature material, surface protectant, abrasive, tools and wear-resistant material.
12. Cab6 has high conductivity and low power function, so it can be used as a hot cathode material. Calcium Hexaboride oxidizes when used at high temperatures, reducing its performance and shortening its service life.
