By vigorous stirring, the diluted monohydrate lithium hydroxide is gradually added to the fatty acid dispersion, heating the water to just below the boiling point. Since these lithium soaps are difficult to filter, they are collected by spray drying. For applications, lithium 12-hydroxystearates are usually dispersed in synthetic oils such as silicone oils and ester oils. Synthetic oils are favored for their greater stability and performance at extreme temperatures.

Using castor oil as raw material, 12-hydroxy stearic acid was prepared by hydrogenation. After the first reaction, most of the double bonds are saturated and the hydroxyl group is dehydrated and reduced leading to the formation of stearic acid. The result of hydrogenation of castor oil is a mixture of 12-hydroxy stearic acid and stearic acid.
