Iron carbide Fe3C powder overview
Iron carbide is an inorganic substance with the chemical formula Fe3C. In metallurgy, it is called cementite. It is an off-white crystalline powder with a relative density of 7.694 and a melting point of 1250°C. Insoluble in water, soluble in acid. Iron carbide is an orthorhombic crystal. Each carbon atom is surrounded by 6 iron atoms at the top corners, forming an octahedral structure.

Cementite is also called iron carbide. In white cast iron boxes, cementite is formed directly from the melt. For carbon steel, it can be formed by austenitic cooling or martensitic tempering. As mentioned earlier, cementite consists of 0.07 carbon. Therefore, in the iron-carbon phase system, the alloy is not cast iron or steel because all its available iron content is in the cementite. In some cases, cementite combines with austenite by-product ferrite to form bainite and pearlite or a layered structure. Because cementite tends to be thermodynamically unstable, it will eventually transform into graphite and ferrite.
