Molybdenum disilicide overview
Molybdenum disilicide is the silicon compound of molybdenum, also known as molybdenum silicide. Since the radii of the two atoms are not much different, the electronegativities are relatively close, and they have similar properties to metals and ceramics. The melting point is as high as 2030 ℃, and it is conductive. At high temperature, a passivation layer can form silicon dioxide on the surface to prevent further oxidation. Appearance is gray metallic color, derived from its tetragonal α-type crystal structure, and also has a hexagonal but unstable β-modified crystal structure, insoluble in most acids, but soluble in nitric acid and hydrofluoric acid.
What are the limitations of MoSi2?
MoSi2 exhibits low toughness below 1000 °C, which means that the material is very brittle at room temperature and only becomes plastic at higher temperatures.
It exhibits poor creep resistance above 1200 °C.
